My pets are 3 years (male) and two years old (F). Never bothered about their nails thinking to leave it on nature. Now I can see overgrown nails are pausing problem. tried with scissors, nail cutters but too thick to cut through. How best to cut or contain a dog's nail? I have two Lhasas. never cared for their nails before. Please help.
As a dog groomer, I have to say that the safest way is to only take off the little points at the end of nail. Just a little tiny bit. If you walk them on concrete it kind of files them down. Please don't cut your dogs nails to the size you think they should be. they bleed profusely. It.s even harder to cut black toenails, you can't see the vein. How best to cut or contain a dog's nail? There are special nail clippers for dogs that you can get at any PetCo or PetSmart and they are curved and are very easy to use.
Don't cut too much for starters because you risk cutting the ';quick,'; which is a vein that runs in their nail and if you cut it, it's very painful and the dog will bleed turning the nail brown.
Go to a pet store and get dog nail clippers, yes they sell them, they are stronger than human clippers and curved like a dogs nail.
If that still doesn't work take them to a groomer, most places won't charge much for just a nail trim and groomers have the best equipment around
There is also this thing I saw a commercial for, the pet-i-cure, supposedly it is the best way to care for your pet's nail, it files them down, if you can find it let me know how it works
Take them to a groomer - they will do it for less than 10 bucks usually and then from there you should be able to maintain it and they can show you how to do it.
Have a vet or groomer show you how, but I always clip my dogs' nails. You have to be careful NOT to cut the ';quick'; it will bleed. Only cut the nail at the bottom of the curve. Some dogs you can see where the quick starts if they have see-thru nails, if the dog has black nails turn the paw upside down, sometimes you can see the quick from underneath, and cut the part that's at the bottom of the curve of the nail.
I posted a question similar to this about a month ago. I wouldn't try scissors ever again. Over the counter nail cutters can only do so much with thick nails. Try a nail file, or walking them on the PAVEMENT, not grass. If they get thick though the best thing to do is let your VET cut them they are professinal and know what to do. It should be free or around $7.00 at you own Vet. Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
are you saying you haven't cut their nails in 2-3 years? if so your vet never noticed when they were seen and told you they need their nails cut?
the quick must be very long by now how are they walking?
YOU NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR THE QUICK
have a professional do it if you dont know how PLEASE
Your best bet is a vet or a groomer to take them back were they need to be and then use nail trimmers on your own to keep them that way. Over grown nails can cause problems walking and even curve under into the pad itself. The groomer or vet should be glad to show you how. Be sure to get some blood stop or kwik stop in case you trim them too close.
