When you cut the nails what you are looking is called the ';quick line';. The quick line is the line on the rabbit's toenails that you don't want to cut beyond or else you will hit nerves in the toenail and draw blood. For rabbits with white toenails, the white portion of the nail you can cut, but you don't want to get into the pink portion. The quick line is the line that is formed between the white and pink. The website below shows that pretty well.

White toenails are very easy to find the quick line. Colored toenails are harder to find the quickline, but you don't really need a flashlight to find them. On colored toenails, you should noticed a subtle color difference where the nerve portion that you shouldn't cut into is darker.

You don't have to have a second person to help you if you are cutting rabbit toenails but it doesn't hurt.

If it's your first time, I recommend wearing an old thick coat or thick sweater so you don't get scratched up. As you get better at handling your rabbit, you won't need the thick closthing to protect you.

First, put your rabbit on a sample carpet pad or old towel. Next, grab the hide behind the rabbit's neck. Use your left hand if you are left handed and your right hand if right handed. Then wrap your thumb around the base of the rabbit's ears as close to the base as you can. Wrapping your thumb around the base of the ears gives you control over the rabbit's head. A rabbit will rotate its head so that it can shift its body weight and flip over. If you can control the head, you can prevent the rabbit from flipping over. The closer your thumb is to the base of the ears, the more control you have over the head.

Next, place your other hand on the rabbit's rump. Then slowly roll the rabbit over onto its back. Use the arm that is holding the hide to push the rabbit's body up against yours to steady it. If the rabbit starts to kick, take the hand that was on its rump and place it between the rabbit's back legs and spread your hand. This helps prevent the rabbit from kicking you and it helps balance the rabbit.

When a rabbit feels unbalanced it will start to kick to regain balance. It will do that when you are carrying it or when you are trying to flip it over. Keeping the rabbit balanced is very important.

Now you can use the hand that was on the rump to expose the toenails and clip them. Use your thumb to press down on the foot padding and that will expose the toenailis. Then just trim the toenails and make sure you don't cut beyond the quick line. If you are unsure if you are beyond the quick line, then cut slowly. The rabbit will flinch and kick if you are starting to cut too far back and you can stop before you cut very far.

Have some paper towels ready just in case you cut too far.

It will take some getting used to, but you don't need a vet to cut rabbit nails. How do you care for nails of a lop ear rabbit?
Get a nail trimmer like what you would use for a cat. Have some one hold it feet out. They are not very agile so you can clip them ease this way. Most of their nails are white so you should be able to see the vain (pink) do not clip close to this.
When I went to the vet with my 11 month old rabbit the vet said it would be way better to have a vet do it than an owner because they might hurt the rabbit. If you do it by yourself then you need to wrap your rabbit in a towel so it wont break its back. They can break their back real easily.

Hope this will help you!
