Nail care for a nail bitter?

I have bitten my nails since I was a very small child (I'm 30 now) and now I'm really focusing on this bad habit to break it. Problem is though that my nails are very brittle and bend and break easily plus they are very thin. Is there anything I can do or use to help to strengthen them and to make them thicker so they won't break? I'm using gel acrylics right now to help me with the stopping to bite them and they are growing out long under them. But the acrylics are expensive to have retouched up every 3 weeks. Any suggestions?Nail care for a nail bitter?
Let your nail tech. know that you'd like to grow out your acrylics so she can help you with the transition. You may want to continue to get professional manicures every 2 weeks to keep your nails looking good and maintain them yourself at home in between appointments. (See article link below.)

Here are some hints to help you maintain your natural nails:

I used to have very weak finger nails so I started protecting them with rich moisturizers. Then I read somewhere that nail clippers can cause the layers of the nail to separate and filing is the best way to go.

I started with Revlon's disposable files made for weak nails. File in one direction only. Start on one side and file towards the middle, then go to the other side and file towards the middle of your nail. Smooth the nail into a squoval that mirrors you cuticle or the shape of the white part of your nail bed.

Finish the edges of the nail with a hindo stone, a smooth ceramic/stone nail file or the finest grit nail file you can find. You want to make the edges really smooth.

Revlon makes a tool that should work. It is a pink half moon shape and you can run it under/across the nail from side to middle.

(I have an old hindo stone but haven't been able to find a replacement at a local store. The Revlon tool might be easier for you to find.)

Also, avoid using metal nail files. I recommend using disposable nail files and changing them frequently. The fresher the grit, the less the drag which leads to tearing and peeling.

Some people swear by glass nail files but they can shatter if dropped.

I also use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize my nails and protect them from water since I wash my hands frequently.

(ex. Solar Oil, OPI Avoplex)

Vit E oil, jojoba oil, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Vaseline or plain Chapstick will work too.

Avoid products w/ formaldehyde or toluene, they are very hard on nails.Nail care for a nail bitter?
try buying a special nail polish that taste bad so you can stop biting your nails and stregthen your nails....if you cant find any then try putting pieces of garlic in a cler nail polish ..let them stay there 4 a few days then take em out then use like regular nail polish.
I have to wear the acrylic due to the same problem. They are the only products that I cant bite thru-it hurts my teeth. I know they can get expensive but I consider it my treat to myself, and it makes my hands look good. If its just an expense you cant spare, try Nutra Nail. Its very simple and is applied like polish.
You can put nail strengthener on your nails to make them harder and vinegar on them to keep you from biting them. But if you want harder nails, dont put hard fake nails on because it will weaken them. i hope this was helpfull!
put hot sauce on your nails!!! then you wont want to bite them!
There are clear polishes that have a nasty taste so every time you go to bite your nails you'll have this nasty flavor in your mouth. There is also a protein polish you can put on your nails and it makes them amazingly stronger and they grow nicely.
You should be doing anything but acrylics. Those are terrible for your nails since they are actually painted on to the nail. I suggest getting some thumb-sucking stuff that babies use to stop the biting and get a nail hardener like Sally Hansen Hard as Nails or a strengthening serum, which they have several kinds of at Sephora.
I was just like you, infact my nails are very bad, but I came up with a system that works for me. I start with trimming my cuticles, I know some people think this is wrong but my cuticles bleed if I don't trim them evenly. I then you Sally Hansen age correction base coat, it is a pink bottle, this actually spreads out over the nail and covers all the dents and other imperfections. I then put two coats of my favorite color, I don't use anything with metalics in it because it drys stick, only opaiques. I then use a Sally Hansen top coat that hardens quickly, it is in a red bottle, I also blow dry my nails for a few minutes just to help it along. This will last 7 days without chipping once you have perfected your system. Try things to see if you like them. Come up with your own system if mine isn't right for you. Also people have asked me if my nails are fake because they look so good. And another good tip, do not pick the polish off, only use nail polish remover and try not to do you nails more than once a week, this will help with the brittleness. Good luck painting.
get a polish that tasted bad ';BITE IT'; works well and get another polish that will make them stronger and longer in about 4-7 days. you can find them at like walmart

i used to be a nail biter..now i have braces so i cant bite them

put it on like every day
well you should go to the store like CVS or Brooke's Pharmacy or any store that sells nail polish or nail products and it has like make up because they usually go together.
